Two people were taken to hospital following an explosion at a house in Oakworth last night.

One of the victims suffered burns and the other inhaled smoke in the incident at Brook Row, at 10pm.

Firefighters from Keighley, Bingley, Illingworth, Cleckheaton and Dewsbury fought through snow to reach the scene.

The cause of the explosion, which affected an extension at the terraced cottage, is believed to have been gas.

At least 10 neighbouring houses were evacuated and this morning the occupants had not been allowed to return.

The road remained cordoned off below the cottages and on Station Road above Oakworth Station.

A fire crew was on standby in case anything began smouldering.

A resident of nearby Station Road, who did not want to be named, said householders were woken by the explosion.

He said: "Everybody was outside. There was a small fire at the back of the house."
